How do you brew a great cup of coffee? Unfortunately, as the saying goes – one man’s pleasure is another man’s poison. However, with coffee making, there are a few rules that you can follow so that you always produce a great cup of coffee. Water: 1. The purer the water you use the better. To make a great cup of coffee, filtered water is best, so that all the additives in the water don’t taste through the coffee. If you do not have a water filter in your household water supply, then I suggest that you install a water filtration kit, to ensure you are using the cleanest water possible. 2. The temperature of the water should be between 198°F and 205°F when it hits the coffee grounds. Coffee machines are made to add the water at the ideal temperature, but if you are making coffee in a Coffee Pot or French Coffee Press then boil your water first and let it cool down slightly to the correct temperature. Coffee: 1. Once coffee has been ground it should be used as soon as possible (usually within 10 days). If you do have some left over, then try storing it an airtight container and keep it in a cool place, but not for too long. So only buy the quantity of coffee that you think you will use before it goes stale or deteriorates. If you are grinding your own coffee beans, make sure you grind them just before brewing. This will produce the best results. 2. Although the coffee usually comes with recommended amounts of coffee grounds to use, also check the recommendation that comes with your coffee maker. These may differ a bit, and if they do, it is probably better to go with the amount recommended by the coffee maker manufacturer for your first brew, and then adjust that amount according to your taste for subsequent brews. Further hints and tips: 1. Drink the coffee as soon as possible after making it. Do not re-heat brewed coffee. If you like a few cups of coffee within a couple of hours, consider purchasing a thermal carafe coffee maker. 2. Make sure all equipment and utensils are absolutely clean and dry, and that all coffee pots are pre-warmed before use. 3. If you have a plumbed-in coffee machine do use a scale grenade to help prevent the build-up of minerals and lime. For water filtration kits, please click here. For coffee pods, please click here.
